What is Skill in the AI Profitability Gap™?

Skill is whether people can get more out of AI tools than the obvious. The AI Profitability Gap™ is the distance between what an organization spends on AI and the commercial return it produces. On the AI Profit Bridge, Skill sits in the Empowered People row, at steps 4 and 7, Adoption That Sticks and Human Craft Advantage.

What does missing Skill look like?

People open the tool, use it for the first thing it does well, and stop there. Usage looks healthy in the dashboard. The harder tasks, where the return is, are still done the old way.

How many workers are still early on the AI learning curve?

PwC puts 56% of workers in what it calls the engine room: their skills aren't scarce, and they're not far along the AI learning curve. Only two in five of them say they have the learning resources they need (PwC, September 2026).

How do you test for Skill?

Ask whether your people are doing anything with the tools beyond the first obvious use. Then ask them to show you, on a real task.

    How do you build Skill?

Train on people's own work, with protected time to practice afterwards. Let the strongest user on a task show the rest. That is step 4, Adoption That Sticks. At step 7, Human Craft Advantage, the time AI saves goes into judgment: knowing what good looks like.

Is Skill the same as AI training?

Training is one input. Skill is the result you can see in the work: a task done better or faster with the tool than without it. A completed course with unchanged work has not built Skill.

    Frequently asked questions

What does Skill mean in AI adoption?

Skill is whether people can get more out of AI tools than the obvious. It is one of three conditions, with Direction and Reinvestment, that decide whether AI spend turns into return.

Which part of the AI Profit Bridge holds Skill?

The Empowered People row, at step 4, Adoption That Sticks, and step 7, Human Craft Advantage. Usage sits in the same row, at step 1, Honest Baseline.

How do I know if my team lacks Skill?

If your people use the tools only for the first obvious task, Skill is the gap. The free assessment checks it in about two minutes.
